About the role
Returning Officers make elections happen. There are a number of opportunities across districts/regions in New South Wales, the returning officer coordinates and manages a large-scale operation to deliver the election on time.
Training is provided and no previous election management is required.
- Australian citizens who are enrolled to vote.
- Demonstrated operational management experience including delivering end-to-end processes within a short timeframe.
- Demonstrated ability to lead a team in a customer-focused, high-pressure environment.
- Demonstrated computer skills and knowledge of the MS Office suite, particularly MS Word and Excel and ability to use electronic devices.
- Political neutrality with no affiliation to political parties or lobbyists/third parties campaigners.
- Satisfactory criminal record check.
- Drivers license.

Returning officers coordinate and manage a large-scale operation to deliver the election on time in each of the electorates in New South Wales. Wherever possible, we appoint returning officers within their local community; we use the location of the Returning Officer’s office and your residential address to identify and appoint applicants within each community.
You can select your preferred council area and indicate an additional two that you would consider.
If you are willing and able to relocate to another area for the electoral period, you can nominate any area you would be happy to work in. Travel costs and accommodation may apply for relocation.

To be eligible, all applicants must be available during the following periods:

15 July – 18 Oct 2024 Full-time engagement
You will be employed on a temporary basis from 15 July to 18 Oct 2024. You will be required to attend face-to-face training in June/July 2024.
The position is full-time (35-hour week). Package includes (pro rata) salary of $120,859 plus employer’s contribution to superannuation.
Regular overtime work will be required (outside of standard business hours and occasional weekend). Overtime, allowances and other entitlements will be paid as per the Crown Employees Award.
Annual leave will be accrued and paid out at the end of the engagement
