How to use the STAR method to answer behavioural interview questions

Behavioural job interview questions are often the most challenging part of the job interview as there are no obvious right or wrong answers.

Through situational interview questions, the hiring manager is looking to find out how you are likely to behave and resolve challenges in the workplace.

The STAR method breaks up the response into four parts: Situation, Task, Action and Results.

Situation

To clearly set the context, state your role, the organisation / department where you were working and provide a brief description of the situation where you demonstrated the capability.

Task

Provide a brief description of the task that you were required to undertake to address the situation.

Action

Describe the actions that you took to resolve the situation is the most important part of your answer.

Results

An achievement statement provides the evidence that your actions were effective and should include the outcome.
