HR jobs: how to attract and retain valuable HR professionals

HR jobs: how to attract and retain valuable HR professionals
Employers within the HR sector are more likely to offer bonuses to encourage staff to stay put than employers in other sectors, the annual Hudson Salary & Employment Insights report found.

More than half (59.6 percent) of HR employers will award bonuses in 2014, and they are most likely to be linked to individual and company performance. This is higher than the average employer; 54.4 percent of all Australian and 55.6 percent of all New Zealand organisations surveyed said they expected to award bonuses in 2014.

Why psychometric assessment beats gut instinct every time

Why psychometric assessment beats gut instinct every time
In ten years of professional recruitment I have averaged about 500 job interviews a year, or 5,000 in total. So you might think I’d be the first person to say that the gut instinct a recruiter develops is more powerful than psychometric assessment. You’d be wrong.

Despite the fact that I interview people for a living (you could call me a professional interviewer), I rarely leave a recruitment process or the acquisition of talent to my gut instinct alone.

Salary guide: how much are you worth?

Salary guide: how much are you worth?
As the end of the financial year looms, professionals across the country are also reviewing the health of their fiscal affairs, and possibly asking themselves the big question – is it time to take another look at that job salary guide?

According to a survey conducted by Hudson of nearly 6,000 employees across Australia and New Zealand, around three in five respondents said they were re-evaluating their employment options.

Diversity in the workplace: Are we all just asking the wrong question?

Diversity in the workplace: Are we all just asking the wrong question?
“If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said a faster horse.” So said Henry Ford on why he used his own initiative to develop the mass produced automobile – and the same logic can be applied to the issue of gender equity across organisations today.

The reason Mr Ford didn’t ask the American people what they wanted was because he knew it was the wrong question.

Boiling point: Are today’s IT project managers under too much pressure?

Boiling point: Are today’s IT project managers under too much pressure?
A litany of failed or off-track projects has culminated in businesses withholding key information from newly recruited IT project managers, perpetuating the revolving door mentality permeating the industry.

Today’s IT project managers are finding it incredibly difficult to manage expectations as organisations come under increased pressure to deliver huge programs of work to strict timelines.

Prospects for accountants: set to improve in Q3?

Prospects for accountants: set to improve in Q3?
There's good reason for accounting and finance professionals to be optimistic about the accounting jobs market this quarter. Industry figures say the recent tentative recovery in hiring intentions is showing some staying power, although accountants’ salaries have yet to start climbing.

Jobs in accounting appear to be on the increase in some industry sectors, but the market is still uncertain and competition for the few positions available is intense.

Does Kids Football Have More Clarity Than Your Business?

Does Kids Football Have More Clarity Than Your Business?
You can see it every Sunday on football pitches across the country. It’s not the teams with the best individual players that consistently win.

Every Sunday I coach a kids football team. I have 14 highly excited children, kids with different personalities and different technical skills, exhausted from a week at school. In two hours, how do I bring this disparate group together into one cohesive unit that scores goals? How do I teach them team work?

Two words: common purpose.

Why workplace diversity is so much more than gender

Why workplace diversity is so much more than gender
When you hear the phrase “workplace diversity” you might assume it’s all about gender. But diversity also spans age, ethnicity, perspectives and experience.

And it matters because, not just in accounting but across all professions, a diverse workforce delivers better business results.

3 ways IT professionals differ from the rest of the workforce

3 ways IT professionals differ from the rest of the workforce
Money is vital and flexibility key, while job security is simply not a top motivator. When it comes to IT jobs, ICT professionals aren’t motivated by quite the same factors as other professions, Hudson research reveals.

Research undertaken for Hudson’s 2014 Salary & Employment Insights salary guides reveals ICT professionals are motivated by subtly different factors to other professions.

36% of workplace diversity programs not working

36% of workplace diversity programs not working
Just one in five Australian and New Zealand employers have workplace diversity initiatives in place aimed at increasing the percentage of women in leadership roles, and of these only a third report the initiatives are actually meeting or exceeding set targets.

That’s according to research by Hudson’s Talent Management division, which this year surveyed HR decision makers across Australia and New Zealand.
